Vietnam’s TTC Group announced plans to spend up to US$1 billion on solar energy projects in that country. Up to 20 solar parks will be built by 2018, providing a combined capacity of about 1GW.
TTC will invest 30% of the funds required for the solar parks, and is currently in talks with banks and other investors.
Being one of Vietnam’s largest companies, TTC Group works with sugar, energy, real estate and tourism industries.
TTC Group’s solar plan was announced after Vietnam’s new solar energy policy came into effect this month. The new policy provides incentives until June 2019 to support renewable energy. Incentives include exemption from import duties, tax breaks and land use.
Currently, Vietnam uses fossil fuels for its 65% energy output, with country energy demand growing at 10% annually. The government has set a goal to cut greenhouse gas emission of 8% by 2030.
About 30 renewable-energy projects are reported to have been registered for licenses in central and south Vietnam. Investors for these projects come from Germany, Japan, South Korea and the U.S. Last month, the 1.06MW Sao Mai 1 solar plant was officially opened. It is the first stage of a $260 million renewable energy venture between Vietnam's Sao Mai Group and Japan's Koyo Corporation.
